Greenlander's Witty Anti-MAGA Hat Gains Widespread Attention as Demand Surges

Greenlander’s Comedic Anti-MAGA Hat Gains Widespread Attention as Demand Surges

Over the weekend, Aannguaq Reimer-Johansen, a resident of Sisimiut, Greenland, shared an image on Facebook that quickly captured widespread attention. The photo showcased a red cap emblazoned with the phrase, "Make America Go Away." This simple yet pointed message cleverly twists President Donald Trump’s well-known slogan, which has long been displayed on red hats: "Make America Great Again."

The image appears to be a direct response to Trump’s persistent ambition to claim Greenland—a self-governing Danish territory—for the United States, declaring he would do so “one way or the other.” Despite clear refusals from both Greenlandic and Danish leadership, U.S. involvement in the Arctic region is pressing on, with an upcoming visit from Second Lady Usha Vance this week.

Though Vance has described her trip as a friendly visit aimed at attending a dog sled race and “celebrating the long history of mutual respect and cooperation” between the United States and Greenland, many remain unconvinced about her true intentions.

Her visit will be preceded by another delegation earlier in the week, including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, further reinforcing concerns about Washington’s strategic interest in the island.

In his Facebook caption, Reimer-Johansen referred to Vance’s trip as a “charm offensive” and warned fellow Greenlanders not to be swayed by her presence. This perspective was shared by another Greenlander, Orla Joelsen, who translated and posted Reimer-Johansen’s message on X (formerly Twitter).

“If you smile at them or take a selfie with them, you are sending a message to the world that you love the USA and want to be part of it,” Reimer-Johansen stated, as translated by Joelsen. “It is recommended not to show interest. We have already expressed our stance through a large demonstration—let’s remain firm and stay united.”

His concerns align with those of many other Greenlanders, including the nation’s outgoing Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede. He recently addressed the increased American presence in Greenland, characterizing the visits as “highly aggressive” and particularly questioning Waltz’s role in the matter.

“What is the national security adviser doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to demonstrate power over us,” Egede remarked.

He went on to warn, “His mere presence in Greenland will no doubt fuel American belief in Trump’s mission — and the pressure will increase.”

Meanwhile, on X, users have expressed solidarity with Greenland’s concerns while also applauding the viral "Make America Go Away" hat. Many are eager to get their hands on one.

“This is a red hat that I could see myself wearing,” one user commented.

“Love it. Good for Greenlanders, standing up to that bully!” another wrote.

“Should make a Canadian version with maple leaf on the side. 🇨🇦,” someone suggested.

“I hear this hat is becoming a Hot item throughout the World!” one user joked.

“embarrassingly American, but id like to wear this inside america,” another user admitted.
