Greenland Reacts Strongly to US Delegation Visit Led by Usha Vance and Mike Waltz

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has criticized the upcoming visit of the US Second Lady and the National Security Adviser, calling it a “provocation.”

Usha Vance, spouse of US Vice President JD Vance, is set to visit Greenland later this week amid ongoing discussions about President Donald Trump’s persistent interest in acquiring the strategically located, semi-autonomous Danish territory.

According to a statement from the White House, Vance, along with a US delegation, will be in Greenland on Thursday to explore historical sites, gain insight into the region’s cultural heritage, and attend the national dogsled race.

The delegation is scheduled to return to the United States on March 29. Among those accompanying her will be White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. A US official confirmed that part of their itinerary includes a visit to an American military installation in Greenland. However, the White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Since assuming office for his second term on January 20, Trump has continually emphasized his desire for Greenland to become part of the United States, stating that it will happen “one way or the other.”

During an interview with Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, Prime Minister Egede expressed strong disapproval of Waltz’s visit, calling it a “provocation.”

“The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us, and the signal is not to be misunderstood,” he remarked. “He is Trump’s confidential and closest adviser, and his presence in Greenland alone will certainly make the Americans believe in Trump’s mission, and the pressure will increase after the visit.”

Greenland’s location, which provides a crucial link between Europe and North America, along with its vast mineral resources, makes it strategically important to the US, particularly in relation to its ballistic missile warning system.

Both the Greenlandic and Danish governments have openly opposed any potential US acquisition of the territory.

Currently, Greenland’s government is in a transitional phase following the March 11 general election, which was won by a party advocating for a gradual approach to independence from Denmark. No official response has been issued regarding requests for comment on the visit.

Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in a written statement addressing the news, underscored the gravity of the situation.

“This is something we take seriously,” she stated, emphasizing that Denmark is willing to work alongside the US, but any collaboration must adhere to “the fundamental rules of sovereignty.”

Frederiksen further asserted that any discussions between the US and Greenland would be conducted in close coordination with both the Danish government and Greenland’s incoming leadership.
