The first full moon of 2025, known as January's Wolf Moon, will reach its peak on Monday. Here's how and when to catch a glimpse.

The First Full Moon of 2025: January's Wolf Moon

The first full moon of the year, called the Wolf Moon, will be at its peak on Monday. According to NASA, January’s full moon will reach peak illumination at 5:27 p.m. ET on Monday.

The moon will appear full for three days, from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning. The Old Farmer’s Almanac provides specific moonrise times for different ZIP codes across the United States.

Why is it called the Wolf Moon?

The term "Wolf Moon" dates back to the 1930s when the Maine Farmers’ Almanac began sharing what it described as Native American names for full moons. This particular name reflects the howling of wolf packs often heard near villages during the cold and snowy depths of winter, according to NASA.

How to Watch the Wolf Moon

No special equipment is needed to enjoy the view of the Wolf Moon. However, for a closer look, NASA recommends using binoculars or a telescope.

What’s Next?

The next full moon, February's Snow Moon, will reach its peak illumination on Wednesday, February 12, at 8:53 a.m. ET, as noted by the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
